An autopen is a device or system that signs documents automatically, producing an autograph-like signature without the signer writing by hand on the page. The device typically relies on a stored image or data set of the signer's signature and translates that into repetitive pen movements that reproduce the signature on each page.

Mechanisms vary. Some autopens replay a traced handwriting pattern with a robotic pen; others apply a pre-generated signature image that is read by the machine. Modern autopen systems can sign thousands of pages per hour and may be integrated with document-management systems to apply dates, titles, and seals.

Uses are common in governments and organizations to sign letters, proclamations, and other official documents when the signer cannot personally sign every copy or when rapid dissemination is required. High-volume correspondence issued in the name of a president, governor, or corporate executive may be produced by autopen after prior authorization of the signature.

Legal and ethical considerations exist. In many jurisdictions, machine-signed documents are legally enforceable if the signer or organization has authorized the process, but autopen use can raise concerns about authenticity and accountability. Therefore, institutions typically label the method, maintain audit trails, and ensure proper authorization to mitigate potential misunderstandings about personal endorsement.
