Autopanning refers to the automated or semi-automated process of moving a camera or other recording device horizontally, typically left to right or right to left. This movement is often used in photography, videography, and filmmaking to follow a subject, create a sense of motion, or reveal a scene.

In photography, autopanning might be achieved through specialized tripod heads or gimbals that are programmed to move at a specific speed and direction. This can be useful for capturing panoramic shots of landscapes or for creating motion blur effects on moving subjects while keeping the background relatively sharp. Some advanced camera systems also have built-in autopan features for time-lapse photography or for continuous tracking of a stationary object.

In video production, autopanning is more commonly referred to as a "pan shot" executed by a camera operator. However, automated systems can be employed for repetitive or precisely controlled panning movements. This can include robotic camera systems used in studios for broadcasting or live events, allowing for smooth and consistent pans that might be difficult for a human operator to achieve repeatedly.

The purpose of autopanning is to add a dynamic element to a static image or to maintain focus on a moving subject without requiring constant manual adjustments.
