Automatismus, or automatism, is a term used in medicine, psychology, neurology, and law to describe actions performed with little or no conscious control. It denotes behavior that occurs automatically, without deliberate intent or awareness, and is contrasted with voluntary, intentional action.

In clinical contexts, automatisms are observed when a person carries out complex actions without conscious guidance. They are most commonly discussed in relation to temporal lobe epilepsy, where complex automatisms such as lip-smacking, wandering, or other purposeful-appearing activities can occur during seizures. If successfully established, the defense can lead to acquittal or a modification of liability, depending on the jurisdiction.
