Autokrácia is a form of government where supreme political power is concentrated in the hands of one person. This individual, often referred to as a dictator, autocrat, or absolute monarch, exercises unrestricted authority. The power held by an autocrat is typically not subject to legal restraints or external checks and balances. Decisions are made solely by the ruler, and there is no formal mechanism for citizens to influence policy or remove the leader.

Historically, autocracies have taken various forms, including absolute monarchies where power is inherited. Modern autocracies can emerge through military coups or the subversion of democratic processes. While the term often carries negative connotations due to its association with tyranny and oppression, the defining characteristic of autocracy is the concentration of power, regardless of the ruler's disposition.
