Autenticity is the quality of being genuine, real, and true to origin, creator, or intended character. In English, authenticity describes how closely an object, statement, or person corresponds to its source or original nature. The concept spans philosophy, art, culture, information, and consumer goods, and it is central to questions of trust, authority, and credibility. In philosophy and ethics, authenticity concerns living in accordance with one's true self or essential values rather than social expectations. In art and cultural heritage, it involves the genuineness of a work, its attribution, and its provenance. In commerce, authenticity differentiates legitimate products from counterfeits, unauthorized reproductions, and deceptive branding. In information ecosystems, authenticity addresses the reliability and origin of data and claims.

Digital contexts often rely on cryptographic signatures, trusted certificates, and blockchain-based provenance to verify origin and integrity of data and digital assets.

Challenges include counterfeiting and misattribution, as well as the social and cultural dimensions of authenticity, which can be subjective or market-driven. Technological advances such as digital editing, deepfakes, and metadata manipulation complicate verification and necessitate robust authentication practices.
