Atopic refers to a genetic predisposition to develop allergic diseases. These conditions are characterized by an overreaction of the immune system to otherwise harmless substances, known as allergens.

Atopic dermatitis typically involves itchy, inflamed, and dry skin, often appearing in the creases of the elbows and knees.

Diagnosis of atopic conditions usually involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and allergy testing, such as skin prick tests or blood tests. Treatment strategies aim to manage symptoms, prevent exposure to allergens, and reduce inflammation. This can include antihistamines, corticosteroids, immunotherapy, and lifestyle modifications. While atopy itself cannot be cured, the associated allergic diseases can often be effectively managed.
