Atonal is a term used in musicology to describe music that does not establish or rely on a single tonal center or key. In atonal music, traditional harmony based on major and minor scales and the functional relationships of tonic, dominant, and subdominant is diminished or absent. The result is a texture in which pitch relationships are not organized around a central pitch.

The concept is most closely associated with early 20th-century composers who sought to move beyond the tonal system of the common practice period. Although chromatic experimentation appeared earlier, Arnold Schoenberg is the central figure linked to the development of formal atonality. Works from this period, including Pierrot Lunaire (1912) and other pieces by Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern, explore dissonance as a structural rather than merely decorative element. In the 1920s Schoenberg developed the twelve-tone technique, a systematic method destined to become a major route to post-tonal composition, though not all atonal music uses this method.

Characteristics of atonal music vary, but common features include an absence of a home key, equal emphasis on all pitch classes, and a focus on motivic or rhythmic coherence rather than functional harmonic progressions. Techniques such as tone rows, inversion, retrograde, and retrograde inversion are used to organize pitch material.

Atonality had a profound impact on the trajectory of Western art music, contributing to the growth of serialism, experimentalism, and various post-tonal approaches. Its reception ranged from critical and intellectual engagement to enduring controversy among listeners and composers.
