Athymic refers to a condition or state characterized by the absence or severe underdevelopment of the thymus gland. The thymus is a primary lymphoid organ located in the upper chest, just behind the sternum and between the lungs. It plays a crucial role in the development and maturation of T lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell essential for adaptive immunity. T cells are responsible for cell-mediated immunity, which includes directly killing infected cells and regulating immune responses.

Individuals or animals that are athymic have a significantly impaired T cell repertoire, leading to a compromised immune system.
