Atelemek, also known as ateles, are a group of New World monkeys belonging to the family Atelidae. They are native to the tropical forests of Central and South America. Atelemek are distinguished by their long, prehensile tails, which they use for grasping branches and swinging through the canopy. They are primarily frugivorous, feeding on fruits, but also consume leaves, flowers, and insects.

There are two main genera within the family Atelidae: Ateles and Alouatta. Ateles, commonly known as spider monkeys, are the largest of the ateles and are characterized by their long, slender tails and distinctive black and white fur. Alouatta, or howler monkeys, are larger and have shorter tails. They are known for their loud, howling calls, which can be heard over long distances.

Atelemek play a crucial role in their ecosystems as seed dispersers. Their diet consists mainly of fruits, which they consume and then disperse the seeds through their feces. This helps to regenerate forest vegetation and maintain biodiversity.

Despite their ecological importance, ateles are threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation and hunting. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these primates and their habitats.
