Assotsatsioon is a term used to describe a formal group of individuals or organizations formed to pursue shared interests or goals. Etymology and usage: The concept derives from the French word association and Latin associatio. In Estonian, the standard spelling is assotsiatsioon, though older texts or informal usage may render the form assotsatsioon. The term denotes a structured entity rather than a loose alliance.

Structure and governance: A typical association has a constitution or statutes, rules for membership, and a governance body such as a general meeting, a board or executive committee, and sometimes a supervisory or audit body. Registered associations may have legal personality, enabling them to own property, enter contracts, and sue or be sued in their own name.

Activities and roles: Associations coordinate activities on behalf of their members, provide services such as education, advocacy, networking, or cultural and recreational programs, and represent member interests in public life or within specific professional fields.
