Aspektile is a term used in speculative design and material science to describe a class of decorative tiles whose visual appearance depends on viewing angle and lighting. In envisioned implementations, aspectiles display different colors, textures, or patterns as the observer's perspective changes, enabling dynamic surfaces for architecture and interiors.

The effect is achieved through a combination of angle-sensitive pigments, microstructured coatings, and optional active elements. Angle-dependent color can be produced by anisotropic pigments, thin-film interference structures, or diffractive gratings. Active implementations may incorporate electrochromic layers or micro-LED backlighting to enhance variability. Durability and compatibility with existing tile installation remain critical considerations, as with conventional ceramic or porcelain tiles.

Manufacture involves applying specialized coatings to tile bodies, often replacing standard glazing with multi-layer interference coatings or oriented pigment films. Quality control ensures uniform orientation and adhesion, while edges are finished to match traditional tile standards. Maintenance is similar to conventional tiles, though cleaning protocols may need to account for the additional coatings or embedded elements.

Applications include interior accents, façade cladding, and art installations where changing appearance is desirable. Despite interest in design contexts, aspectile technology is not yet widespread and remains largely within prototypes and pilot projects. Cost, durability, and energy considerations influence adoption, and ongoing research seeks to balance visual versatility with practical performance.
