The industry includes bitumen producers, aggregate suppliers, additive manufacturers, and contracting firms that perform mixing, laying, and maintenance. Demand is tied to public infrastructure investment, traffic growth, and routine maintenance cycles. Ongoing innovations seek improved performance at extreme temperatures, longer life, better recyclability, and lower energy use, through warm-mix technologies, modified binders, and recycled content.

Environmental and safety considerations include emissions from plants, energy use, dust, and handling of hot materials. Regulations address air quality, waste management, and worker safety. The industry increasingly emphasizes recycling and sustainable design to extend pavement life, reduce life-cycle costs, and minimize environmental impact.
