Asfaltindustrien, or the asphalt industry, encompasses the production, distribution, and application of asphalt mixtures used for paving roads, highways, airports, and other surfaces. The primary material is bitumen (asphalt binder) combined with aggregates to form asphalt concrete. The industry relies on several production methods, most notably hot mix asphalt (HMA) and warm mix asphalt (WMA). In HMA, aggregates and binder are heated and mixed at high temperatures before placement; in WMA, lower temperatures reduce energy use and emissions. Plants may also produce emulsified asphalts for surface treatments and tack coats. Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) recycling is common, with RAP blended into new mixes to conserve virgin materials.

Paving involves transporting and laying asphalt with pavers, followed by compaction with rollers to create a smooth, durable surface. Applications include expressways, urban streets, parking lots, and airfields. The industry includes bitumen producers, aggregate suppliers, additive manufacturers, and contracting firms that perform mixing, laying, and maintenance. Demand is tied to public infrastructure investment, traffic growth, and routine maintenance cycles. Ongoing innovations seek improved performance at extreme temperatures, longer life, better recyclability, and lower energy use, through warm-mix technologies, modified binders, and recycled content.

Environmental and safety considerations include emissions from plants, energy use, dust, and handling of hot materials. Regulations address air quality, waste management, and worker safety. The industry increasingly emphasizes recycling and sustainable design to extend pavement life, reduce life-cycle costs, and minimize environmental impact.
