Ascendancy refers to a state or period in which an entity—such as a nation, group, institution, or idea—exerts dominant influence, control, or preeminence within a given sphere. The term derives from the Latin ascendere, meaning “to climb,” with the suffix -ancy indicating a state or condition. It is often contrasted with decline or parity and is typically used to describe relative superiority rather than absolute power.

In politics and history, ascendancy is used to mark times when one power is preeminent, such as the ascendancy of Rome in the ancient Mediterranean, or the mid-20th century ascendancy of the United States in global affairs. Economic ascendancy refers to sustained leadership in global output or trade. Cultural and technological ascendancy describe the predominance of a culture, language, or technology, which can shape global norms and institutions. Religious ascendancy describes a situation where a religious institution holds the dominant religious authority within a region or country.

Ascendancy is often provisional and contested; it may arise from military strength, economic power, diplomatic influence, technological innovation, or organizational resilience. It can be reinforced by alliances, institutions, and soft power, and eroded by competition, overreach, or internal weakness. The concept emphasizes relative position and transition rather than a fixed status.
