Archeologists, also spelled archaeologists, are scholars who study human history and prehistory through the excavation and analysis of physical remains. Their work spans the identification of artifacts, architecture, biofacts, and site contexts, allowing them to reconstruct past cultures and societies. The discipline combines rigorous scientific methods with analytical interpretations that are grounded in cultural, environmental, and technological contexts.

The origins of archeology trace back to the eighteenth century, when antiquarian collectors began systematically excavating ancient Greek and Roman sites. Formal scientific archeology developed in the early nineteenth century, marked by the publication of classic treatises on stratigraphy and typology. Influential figures such as Heinrich Schliemann, who excavated Troy, and Christian Jürgensen Thomsen, who established the "principle of the Three Age System" (Stone, Bronze, Iron), helped shift the field toward methodological rigor. Since the mid‑twentieth century, archeology has expanded to include interdisciplinary approaches, incorporating advances in geophysical surveys, remote sensing, DNA analysis, and GIS technology.

Archeologists typically specialize in a specific geographic region or period, but many also focus on particular themes such as maritime archaeology, forensic archeology, or the archaeology of urban environments. Fieldwork is complemented by laboratory analysis, cataloguing, and publication of findings. Academic training usually involves a bachelor’s and graduate degree in archeology or a related field, along with field school experience and proficiency in subjects such as geology, geography, and laboratory techniques.

Today the profession engages with ethical issues related to heritage preservation, repatriation of cultural artifacts, and community engagement. Archeologists contribute invaluable insights into human adaptation, technological change, and cultural interactions across time, making their work central to understanding humanity’s collective past.
