ArchaicEuropean is a term used in paleoanthropology and archaeology to describe the populations and material cultures that inhabited Europe during the archaic phases of human prehistory. It is not a formal taxonomic category, but an umbrella designation for multiple hominin lineages and cultural traditions that existed on the continent from the late Pleistocene into the early Holocene.

The concept covers a broad temporal and geographic span, roughly from about 0.7 million years ago with early European hominins through the presence of Neanderthals and the arrival of anatomically modern humans in Europe, continuing until the end of the Pleistocene and the onset of the Holocene, around 10–12 thousand years ago. Regional variation was substantial, with different sites preserving distinct lithic sequences and subsistence patterns.

Evidence for archaic Europe includes fossil remains, skeletal morphology, and increasingly extensive genetic data. Neanderthals and other archaic Europeans left a substantial fossil record across western, central, and southern Europe. Genomic analyses show admixture between Neanderthals and modern humans, with non-African populations carrying approximately 1–2% Neanderthal ancestry. Tool styles evolved from Acheulean to Mousterian, and later to transitional and Upper Paleolithic industries such as Chatelperronian, Aurignacian, and Gravettian, reflecting evolving technologies and adaptations.

The term is sometimes debated among researchers because it can obscure regional diversity and the complexity of interactions among populations. Some scholars prefer to emphasize discrete lineages and local developments rather than a single continental label.
