It defines the available operating system, runtime, libraries, databases, and network resources, along with security and monitoring practices that affect how the app behaves.

Components of an appmiljø typically include the operating system and hardware, the runtime or platform (such as a Java Virtual Machine, .NET CLR, or Node.js), application dependencies, configuration data, secrets management, data stores, caches, messaging systems, and external integration endpoints. The environment also encompasses deployment artefacts like containers or virtual machines and the hosting or orchestration platform that runs them.

Different environments are used to separate stages of the software lifecycle. Common types include development, testing, staging, and production. Each environment usually mirrors the others to varying degrees and has distinct access controls, data sets, and performance expectations to support development, validation, and reliability.

Management of appmiljøs relies on practices such as infrastructure as code, automated provisioning, versioned configurations, and immutable infrastructure. Containers and orchestration platforms support consistent environments and safer deployments. Secrets and configuration should be handled securely, and monitoring, logging, and alerting should be standardized across environments to facilitate troubleshooting and incident response.

The concept is related to but distinct from the development environment (udviklingsmiljø) and the production environment (produktmiljø). Effective handling of app environments reduces configuration drift, improves reliability, and simplifies testing and rollback.
