Aplural is a term encountered in some linguistic discussions to describe a noun or noun system that lacks explicit plural marking. In this sense, words categorized as aplural do not change form to indicate quantity, and plurality is conveyed by other means such as numerals, determiners, classifiers, or context. The concept is related to, but distinct from, established notions like pluralia tantum (words that occur only in the plural) and singularia tantum (words that occur only in the singular).

The term is not part of mainstream typologyy, and there is no widely accepted formal definition in the core linguistic literature. When used, aplural typically refers to analytic or zero-marking systems where number is not encoded morphologically on the noun itself. This can occur in languages with strong reliance on adjectives, determiners, or numerical expressions to indicate amount, rather than through noun inflection. Aplurals can also appear in hypothetical or constructed languages, where the designer specifies that nouns remain unchanged across singular and plural contexts.

Usage and reception: Aplural is largely informal and niche. Many linguists prefer other terms such as zero plural, no plural marking, or simply “no plural morphology” to describe the phenomenon. Because it is not an established category, explanations of aplural commonly require clarifying how number is managed in the language system and how it differs from related concepts like mass nouns, uncountables, or pluralia tantum.
