Antitranspirants are cosmetic products designed to reduce excessive sweating, a condition known as hyperhidrosis. These products work primarily by creating a physical barrier on the skin that temporarily blocks sweat glands from releasing moisture. Unlike antiperspirants, which contain aluminum-based compounds that inhibit sweat production chemically, antitranspirants rely solely on mechanical obstruction.

The most common form of antitranspirants is a powder or spray applied to the skin. When dried, these products form a thin, breathable film that restricts sweat from escaping. They are often used on areas prone to excessive sweating, such as the underarms, palms, and soles of the feet. Some formulations also include ingredients like starch or silica to absorb moisture, enhancing their effectiveness.

Antitranspirants are generally considered safe for most individuals, though some users may experience mild irritation or clogged pores. Those with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema should test the product on a small area first. Unlike antiperspirants, antitranspirants do not contain aluminum salts, making them a preferred option for people who avoid aluminum-based products due to concerns about potential health effects.

While antitranspirants provide temporary relief, their effects typically last only a few hours before requiring reapplication. For persistent hyperhidrosis, medical treatments such as prescription-strength antiperspirants, iontophoresis, or surgical interventions may be recommended. Proper use involves applying the product to clean, dry skin and allowing it to dry completely before dressing.
