Antipõletikuliste, also known as anti-inflammatory drugs, are a class of medications used to reduce inflammation in the body. Inflammation is a natural immune response to injury or infection, but chronic or excessive inflammation can lead to various diseases and discomfort. These drugs work by targeting different pathways involved in the inflammatory process.

The most common type of anti-inflammatory drugs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, work by inhibiting enzymes called cyclooxygenases (COX). COX enzymes are responsible for producing prostaglandins, which are chemicals that promote inflammation, pain, and fever. By blocking COX enzymes, NSAIDs reduce the production of prostaglandins, thereby alleviating these symptoms.

Another significant category of anti-inflammatory medications are corticosteroids. These are synthetic versions of hormones produced by the adrenal glands. Corticosteroids are potent anti-inflammatory agents that work through a different mechanism than NSAIDs, affecting a wider range of inflammatory processes. They are often used for more severe inflammatory conditions like asthma, arthritis, and autoimmune diseases.

While both NSAIDs and corticosteroids are effective at reducing inflammation, they also come with potential side effects. NSAIDs can cause gastrointestinal issues, cardiovascular problems, and kidney damage in some individuals. Corticosteroids, particularly with long-term use, can lead to weight gain, bone thinning, increased susceptibility to infections, and mood changes. Therefore, it is crucial to use these medications as prescribed by a healthcare professional.
