Antigastric refers to substances or treatments that counteract the effects of gastric acid or reduce its production in the stomach. These agents are commonly used in medical practice to manage conditions characterized by excessive stomach acidity, such as peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and hyperacidity. The primary goal of antigastric therapies is to alleviate symptoms like heartburn, indigestion, and nausea while promoting healing of the stomach lining.

Antigastric medications typically fall into several categories. One major class is **histamine H2-receptor antagonists**, such as cimetidine, ranitidine, and famotidine. These drugs inhibit histamine from binding to its receptors in the stomach lining, thereby reducing acid secretion. Another important group is **proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)**, including omeprazole, esomeprazole, and pantoprazole, which block the enzyme responsible for final acid production in the stomach’s parietal cells.

Antigastric effects can also be achieved through antacids, which are bases that neutralize existing stomach acid on contact. Common examples include aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and calcium carbonate. While antacids provide rapid relief, they do not reduce acid production and are often used in conjunction with other treatments.

In some cases, natural or herbal remedies may also exhibit antigastric properties. For instance, licorice root (specifically deglycyrrhizinated licorice, or DGL) and slippery elm are sometimes used to soothe the stomach lining and reduce acidity. However, their efficacy varies, and they are not considered primary treatments for severe conditions.

The use of antigastric agents should be guided by medical supervision, as improper or prolonged use—particularly of PPIs—may lead to complications such as nutrient deficiencies, increased infection risk, or rebound hyperacidity upon discontinuation. Proper diagnosis and treatment planning are essential to ensure safe and effective management of gastric-related disorders.
