anisotroopset

Anisotroopset is a coined term used in materials science and related fields to describe a collection of direction-dependent properties that together characterize anisotropy in a material system.

Formally, it can be defined as either a mapping from orientations on the unit sphere to property tensors, P(ω), or as a finite set {(ω_i, P_i)} where ω_i indicates a grain or direction and P_i the corresponding response tensor. This representation captures heterogeneous or textured anisotropy, such as in composites, polycrystals, or layered media, where at each location the material response varies with direction.

In computational practice, an anisotroopset is used to assign local properties in simulations, to model wave propagation, heat flow, or mechanical behavior under directionally biased loading. From the set, one can derive measures of anisotropy, such as an anisotropy index, or the fabric tensor describing orientation distribution.
