angyal

Angyal is the Hungarian word for an angel, a supernatural being found in the religious and mythological traditions of the Abrahamic faiths. In general usage it denotes a divine messenger, a protector, or an intermediary between God and humans.

Etymology: The term angyal derives from Latin angelus, borrowed into Hungarian via church Latin, tracing ultimately to the Greek angelos, meaning messenger. The word has been established in Hungarian through Christian religious usage and literary tradition.

Religious roles: In Judaism and Christianity, angels are spiritual beings created by God who carry out divine tasks and serve as messengers or guardians. Christian theology often distinguishes among classes such as archangels, with names like Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, who participate in God’s missions. In Islam, angels (mala’ika) are created from light and act in obedience to God; they do not possess free will. Among them, the archangel Gabriel (Jibril) is described as the messenger who revealed the Qur’an to Muhammad.
