Anestesiolog, or anesthesiologist in English, is a medical doctor who specializes in anesthesia, analgesia, and perioperative medicine. They are responsible for the safe management of patients before, during, and after surgical, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures that require anesthesia or sedation. Their goal is to ensure patient comfort and safety by controlling pain, consciousness, and vital functions.

Key responsibilities include preoperative assessment and optimization of medical conditions, choosing an appropriate anesthesia plan, and administering anesthetic agents. They manage airway support, breathing, and circulation during procedures, monitor heart rate, blood pressure, oxygenation, and temperature, and adjust drugs as needed. They also oversee fluid management, blood loss, and postoperative analgesia, and coordinate the transfer of patients to recovery units or intensive care when necessary. Regional and local anesthesia, nerve blocks, and opioid-sparing pain strategies are common components of their practice.

Education and training typically require completing a medical degree followed by a specialty residency in anesthesiology. In many countries, board certification or equivalent credentials are pursued after examinations, with ongoing continuing education. Subspecialties within anesthesiology include pediatric, obstetric, cardiothoracic, neuro, and regional anesthesia, as well as pain medicine and critical care.
