Anarchopunk refers to a loose cultural and musical milieu that fuses punk rock with anarchist political ideas. It emphasizes anti-authoritarianism, anti-capitalism, mutual aid, and a DIY ethos. The movement typically forms around independent bands, fanzines, small labels, and volunteer venues, with a preference for self-production over mainstream industry channels.

Musically, anarchopunk draws on punk and hardcore, often featuring brisk tempos, raw production, and confrontational lyrics. It is closely related to, but not identical with, anarcho-punk and crust punk. Originating in late 1970s and 1980s Britain, it broadened to international scenes and influenced numerous subcultures through independent distribution and benefit events.

Historically, Crass is among the most influential acts associated with the early anarchopunk ethos, promoting pacifism, direct action, and anti-commercialism. Other bands such as Conflict, Flux of Pink Indians, and Chumbawamba helped establish a model of political engagement through music. Zines, mail-order distributors, and benefit gigs were central to the community’s infrastructure.

Practices commonly include producing and sharing zines, running or supporting independent record labels, organizing benefit shows for causes, and participating in anti-fascist and anti-war activism. Many adherents favor non-hierarchical organization, collective decision making, and direct action, though individual commitments vary and not all participants engage in every activity.

Today, anarchopunk remains a loosely defined label used to describe bands, art, and communities that espouse anarchist politics within punk. While the scene is less cohesive than its peak decades ago, the DIY ethic and political focus continue to influence contemporary punk and radical music scenes.
