Analyticiteit is a philosophical concept that distinguishes between two types of propositions: analytic and synthetic. An analytic proposition is one that is true by definition or by virtue of the meaning of its terms. For example, the statement "All bachelors are unmarried" is analytic because the meaning of "bachelor" already includes the concept of being unmarried. The truth of such propositions can be determined by simply understanding the language used.

In contrast, a synthetic proposition is one that is true not merely by definition, but by the way the world is. The truth of a synthetic proposition depends on empirical evidence or facts about reality. For instance, the statement "The sky is blue" is synthetic because its truth depends on observing the color of the sky, not on the definition of "sky" or "blue."

The distinction between analytic and synthetic propositions was prominently discussed by philosophers like Immanuel Kant and later by logical positivists. Kant argued that analytic truths are trivial and provide no new knowledge about the world, whereas synthetic truths, while informative, require external verification. Logical positivists, such as A.J. Ayer, used this distinction to argue that only synthetic propositions capable of empirical verification or analytic propositions could be considered meaningful. Statements that were neither analytic nor empirically verifiable were deemed meaningless or metaphysical.

However, the analytic-synthetic distinction has faced significant philosophical challenges. W.V.O. Quine, in his influential paper "Two Dogmas of Empiricism," critiqued the notion of analyticity, arguing that it is difficult, if not impossible, to draw a clear and non-circular line between statements that are true solely by virtue of meaning and those that are true because of empirical facts. He suggested that our knowledge forms a coherent web, and the distinction between analytic and synthetic truths is a matter of degree rather than an absolute dichotomy. Despite these criticisms, the concept of analyticiteit remains a relevant topic in philosophy of language and epistemology.
