Amnioosi, also known as amniotic fluid leakage or rupture of membranes, refers to the breaking of the amniotic sac during pregnancy, resulting in the discharge of amniotic fluid. The amniotic sac surrounds and protects the developing fetus, providing a cushioning environment that supports fetal development and movement. Its rupture is a common precursor to labor, particularly if it occurs prematurely or before the onset of contractions.

The rupture of membranes can occur naturally, often signaling that labor is imminent, or it may happen prematurely, posing risks such as infections or complications like umbilical cord prolapse. Symptoms include a sudden or gradual gush of fluid from the vagina, which may be clear, pink, or meconium-stained. It is important for pregnant individuals to seek medical attention if they suspect membrane rupture to monitor for signs of infection or labor progression.

Causes of amnioosi include infections, trauma, or complications related to the cervix or uterus. It can also result from medical interventions, such as amniocentesis. In some cases, rupture occurs without clear reason, a condition known as spontaneous rupture of membranes.

Management depends on the timing and circumstances of rupture. If it occurs before 37 weeks of pregnancy (preterm rupture), there may be efforts to delay labor to improve fetal outcomes. If the rupture happens at term, healthcare providers often induce labor to reduce infection risks. Antibiotics and corticosteroids may be administered if there is concern about infection or fetal lung development.
