Amniocentes, in English medical usage, is a nonstandard term that most often refers to amniocentesis or to the amniotic fluid sample obtained during the procedure. Amniocentesis is an invasive prenatal diagnostic test in which a needle is inserted through the mother's abdomen into the amniotic sac under ultrasound guidance to withdraw a small quantity of amniotic fluid. The fluid contains fetal cells and biochemical markers that can be analyzed to assess fetal health.

Indications for amniocenteses commonly include evaluation of fetal karyotype and genetic conditions, especially when there is a known family risk, abnormal ultrasound findings, prior pregnancy with chromosomal or genetic disorders, or maternal age considerations. The procedure is typically offered around 15 to 20 weeks gestation, though later sampling may be performed for other indications. Noninvasive alternatives, such as cell-free fetal DNA testing (NIPT), can screen for some conditions but are not diagnostic; chorionic villus sampling (CVS) provides earlier diagnostic information but carries its own risks.

During the procedure, a local anesthetic may be used, and the clinician uses real-time ultrasound to guide a fine needle into the amniotic sac to collect fluid. Risks include a small increased chance of miscarriage (rates commonly estimated around 0.1% to 0.3%), as well as bleeding, infection, fluid leakage, or cramping. Results depend on the tests ordered: fetal karyotyping or chromosomal microarray from cultured cells may take one to two weeks or more; targeted rapid tests can yield results within a few days.

Amniocentesis remains a valuable diagnostic option when definitive information about fetal genetics or certain fetal conditions is needed.
