Aminosavszintézis refers to the biological process by which organisms create amino acids. Amino acids are the fundamental building blocks of proteins, and their synthesis is crucial for life. In living organisms, this process primarily occurs through metabolic pathways that convert simpler molecules into the twenty common amino acids used in protein formation. These pathways are highly regulated and vary between different organisms, reflecting their specific nutritional requirements and biochemical capabilities.

Microorganisms and plants are generally capable of de novo amino acid synthesis, meaning they can produce all the amino acids they need from inorganic precursors. This self-sufficiency is essential for their survival and growth. In contrast, many animals, including humans, are auxotrophic for certain amino acids, known as essential amino acids. These essential amino acids cannot be synthesized by the animal's body and must be obtained from the diet. The remaining amino acids, termed non-essential amino acids, can be synthesized endogenously.

The synthesis of amino acids involves a series of enzymatic reactions. These pathways often begin with intermediates from central metabolic routes such as glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and the pentose phosphate pathway. For example, glycolysis provides precursors for the synthesis of serine, alanine, and glycine. The citric acid cycle intermediates are utilized to generate glutamate, aspartate, and their derivatives. Specific enzymes catalyze the addition of nitrogen atoms, often derived from ammonia or glutamine, to carbon skeletons to form the amino group characteristic of amino acids. Regulation of these pathways is tightly controlled through feedback inhibition, ensuring that the cell produces only the necessary amounts of each amino acid and avoids wasteful overproduction.
