ambalajul

Ambalajul is the Romanian term for packaging, the materials and structures used to contain, protect, transport, and present goods throughout their life cycle. It includes containers, wrappings, and other means that separate products from the environment and facilitate handling by producers, distributors, retailers, and consumers.

Packaging is organized by function: primary (in direct contact with the product), secondary (grouping and display), and tertiary (logistical units such as pallets). It uses paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, metals, or composites; can be rigid or flexible; and is designed to provide barriers against moisture, oxygen, light, or aromas.

Design considerations include safety for food contact, tamper evidence, information disclosure (nutrition, ingredients, handling), ease of use, and optimization of space and weight to reduce waste and costs. End-of-life aspects are supported by labeling and recycling codes such as resin codes and recycling symbols.

Environmental and regulatory aspects drive modern ambalajul. Efforts focus on material reduction, recyclability, reuse, and a circular economy. Life cycle assessment informs material choice and energy use, while regulations—such as the EU packaging and packaging waste directive and producer-responsibility schemes—encourage design for recyclability and proper waste management.

Trends include lightweighting, greater use of recyclable or compostable materials, improved barrier performance, and the rise of e-commerce packaging that protects products and supports returns.
