Amazónica, or Amazônia in Portuguese, is a term used to refer to the Amazon region and its associated geography, biodiversity, and cultures. In Spanish, amazónico/a is the adjective for things related to the Amazon.

Geographically, the Amazónica region covers parts of nine South American countries. The Brazilian Amazon forms the largest portion of the rainforest, while substantial areas extend into Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, and the French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. Central to the region is the Amazon River system, one of the world’s longest and most voluminous rivers, which drives the basin’s ecology and livelihoods.

Ecologically, the Amazônica region hosts extraordinary biodiversity, complex forest ecosystems, and a climate that sustains heavy rainfall. It plays a key role in global carbon cycling and regional hydrology, and its conservation is a major focus for scientists and policymakers due to biodiversity and ecological importance, as well as the well-being of Indigenous communities.

Human presence is extensive and diverse. Hundreds of Indigenous peoples maintain traditional ways of life, with languages and knowledge closely tied to the forest. Economic activities include sustainable forestry, agroforestry, fishing, and increasingly mining and large-scale agriculture, which can threaten forests and local communities.

Conservation efforts involve governments, Indigenous groups, non-governmental organizations, and international bodies seeking to balance development with forest protection, Indigenous rights, and sustainable resource use. The name derives from the Amazon River, with Amazônia (Portuguese) and amazónico/a (Spanish) used to describe the region and its peoples.
