Etymology and nature: the term aluzja comes from Latin allusio, via French allusion, rooted in the idea of hinting or playing with reference. Aluzje differ from quotations because they do not reproduce exact text; they suggest connections through hints, connotations, and shared knowledge, creating intertextual links rather than authoritative repetition.

Types and functions: aluzje can be historical (to real events or figures), biblical, mythological, literary (to other works or authors), cultural, or political. They may be explicit, with clear naming or recognizable motifs, or implicit, requiring interpretation. Their purposes include enriching meaning, signaling ideological positions, prompting readers to recall related texts, or inviting critique through comparison or dialogue with other works.

Usage in Polish literature: aluzje are a frequent device across periods, especially in Romantic and modern writing. They help situate a text within a broader canon, demonstrate literary competence, or critique social and political conditions. Prominent Polish authors such as Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki, Bolesław Prus, and Stanisław Wyspiański employed aluzje to evoke tradition, highlight national history, or engage in cultural commentary. Examples range from biblical or classical motifs to references to Polish legends and historical events.
