Aluminumtosilicon is a term used to describe the aluminum-silicon alloy system, commonly referred to as silumins in foundry practice. It denotes alloys in which silicon is added to aluminum to improve castability, reduce shrinkage, and enhance wear resistance. The typical microstructure combines a predominantly aluminum matrix with silicon-rich phases dispersed throughout.

Composition and phases. Silicon content in commercial aluminum-silicon alloys generally ranges from about 3 to 13 percent by weight; higher silicon increases wear resistance and decreases shrinkage but can reduce ductility. The aluminum-silicon system features a eutectic point around 12.6 wt% Si and about 577°C, yielding a fine mixture of α-Al and silicon upon solidification.

Processing and microstructure. Alloys are produced by melting aluminum and adding silicon to target a specific composition, sometimes with magnesium, iron, or other elements. Castings solidify with an aluminum-rich matrix and silicon-rich particles, and subsequent heat treatment or mechanical processing refines the microstructure and improves strength and hardness where appropriate.

Applications and properties. These alloys offer good fluidity, low shrinkage, and wear resistance, supporting use in automotive engine blocks and components, pump housings, and other castings. They are valued for lightweight construction and recyclability, though high silicon content can reduce ductility and complicate machining in some variants. Research continues into morphology control and composite formulations.
