Alkaanisäilytys refers to the storage of alkanes, which are saturated hydrocarbons. These compounds, such as methane, ethane, propane, and butane, are commonly found in natural gas and petroleum. Due to their flammability and potential for high vapor pressure, safe and effective storage methods are crucial.

The primary methods for storing alkanes depend on their physical state and the intended use. For small quantities or at ambient temperatures, alkanes are often stored as liquids under pressure in robust containers. This is typical for propane and butane, which are used as fuels in portable cylinders. Larger volumes, particularly those derived from natural gas, are frequently stored as liquefied natural gas (LNG) at very low temperatures, around -162 degrees Celsius. This cryogenic storage significantly reduces the volume required.

Gaseous alkanes can also be stored under high pressure in specialized tanks. This method is employed for gases that are not liquefied for convenience or safety reasons. Regardless of the method, storage facilities must adhere to strict safety regulations to prevent leaks, fires, and explosions. These regulations often dictate materials used for construction, pressure limits, ventilation, and emergency containment systems.
