Alkaanisäilytys, or alkane storage, refers to the methods and considerations involved in keeping alkanes, a class of saturated hydrocarbons, in a safe and stable state. Alkanes are commonly found in natural gas and petroleum, and their storage is crucial for various industrial applications, including energy production and chemical manufacturing.

The primary challenges in alkane storage relate to their flammability and potential for phase changes under different temperature and pressure conditions. For lighter alkanes like methane and ethane, which are gases at ambient temperature and pressure, storage often involves liquefaction. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is stored at cryogenic temperatures (below -160°C) to reduce its volume significantly, making transportation and storage more efficient. This requires specialized insulated tanks capable of maintaining these extremely low temperatures.

Heavier alkanes, such as propane and butane, can be stored as liquids under moderate pressure at ambient temperatures. These are commonly stored in pressurized tanks, often found in domestic and industrial settings for fuel purposes. The pressure within these tanks is carefully controlled to prevent leakage and ensure safe handling.

Longer-chain alkanes, found in fuels like gasoline and diesel, are liquids at ambient conditions and are typically stored in large tanks, often underground or in designated storage facilities. These storage solutions prioritize containment to prevent environmental contamination and fire hazards. Material compatibility is also a key consideration, as certain materials can degrade when in contact with alkanes over extended periods. Regular inspection and maintenance of storage facilities are essential to ensure their integrity and prevent accidents.
