al-Tabari refers to Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari, a prominent medieval Muslim scholar, historian, and Qur’anic commentator active in the 9th and early 10th centuries. He is one of the most influential figures in the development of Islamic knowledge, especially in Qur’anic exegesis and history.

Jami
al-bayan
an
ta’wil
ay
al-Qur’an
(often
shortened
to
Tafsir
al-Tabari),
is
a
comprehensive
Qur’anic
commentary
that
collects
and
analyzes
the
various
traditional
sources
and
reports
associated
with
verses,
noting
differing
opinions
and
assessing
authenticity.
It
is
widely
regarded
as
one
of
the
earliest
and
most
important
exegeses
in
Sunni
Islam
and
served
as
a
model
for
later
commentaries.
His
Tarikh
al-Tabari,
or
History
of
the
Prophets
and
Kings,
is
a
sprawling
universal
history
covering
creation
through
early
Islamic
times,
drawing
on
a
broad
range
of
earlier
chronicles
and
narratives.
The
Tarikh
has
been
a
foundational
source
for
later
historians
and
for
understanding
early
Islamic
historiography.
His
emphasis
on
sourcing
and
compiling
diverse
reports
influenced
subsequent
scholars,
and
his
Tafsir
and
Tarikh
remained
standard
reference
points
in
both
Islamic
scholarship
and
medieval
historiography.
