Ajooikeuksia is the Finnish term referring to the legal right to operate motor vehicles on public roads. In practice, ajooikeudet are granted through obtaining a driving licence (ajokortti), which entitles the holder to drive specific categories of vehicles defined by EU standards, such as AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, C, CE, D and their combinations. Each category specifies which vehicle types and, in some cases, weight or power limits the holder may operate. A licence may cover several categories, and additional categories require separate tests and training.

Acquiring ajooikeuksia typically involves completing mandatory driver education, passing a theory test and a practical driving test. Age requirements and training prerequisites vary by category. Some categories also require medical fitness certificates and vision checks. After obtaining the licence, holders must comply with traffic laws; in many cases younger drivers or new licence holders may face restrictions or probationary terms.

Ajooikeuksia can be restricted, suspended or revoked. Violations, driving under the influence, medical concerns, or accumulating too many penalties can lead to temporary suspension or loss of rights. Reinstatement usually requires renewed assessment and meeting the imposed conditions. The licence is issued by Traficom, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, and enforcement is carried out by the police and other authorities.

EU-wide: Finnish licences follow the EU standard, and licences are generally recognized in other member states. Exchanging a foreign licence for a Finnish one and vice versa is governed by national and EU rules. Renewal and medical/vision checks are typically scheduled before the licence expires.
