ajllu

Ajllu is a term that originates from the Quechua language, an indigenous language spoken in the Andes region of South America. In its most fundamental meaning, "ajllu" translates to "chosen" or "selected." This term was particularly significant within the Inca Empire, where it denoted a special group of women.

These women, referred to as ajllakuna, were chosen from across the empire for their beauty, skill, or perceived spiritual connection. They were educated in weaving, religious practices, and other essential skills. Some ajllakuna were trained to become priestesses, while others were selected to be wives for the Inca ruler or other high-ranking officials. A select few were also dedicated to the service of the gods, living in temples and contributing to religious ceremonies.
