Aivokammiot, also known as cerebral ventricles, are a system of fluid-filled cavities within the brain. These interconnected spaces are responsible for producing, containing, and circulating cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The ventricular system consists of four main components: the two lateral ventricles, the third ventricle, and the fourth ventricle.

The lateral ventricles are the largest and are located in each cerebral hemisphere. Each lateral ventricle has a body, anterior horn, posterior horn, and inferior horn. They are connected to the third ventricle through small openings called the interventricular foramina (of Monro). The third ventricle is a midline cavity situated between the thalami. It communicates with the fourth ventricle through the cerebral aqueduct (of Sylvius), which runs through the midbrain. The fourth ventricle is a diamond-shaped space located in the hindbrain, between the pons, medulla oblongata, and cerebellum. From the fourth ventricle, CSF can exit into the subarachnoid space surrounding the brain and spinal cord through three openings: the median aperture (of Magendie) and the two lateral apertures (of Luschka).

Cerebrospinal fluid plays several crucial roles. It acts as a shock absorber, protecting the brain from physical trauma. It also helps to nourish the brain by transporting nutrients and removing waste products. Furthermore, CSF helps maintain a stable chemical environment for brain cells and plays a role in regulating brain temperature. The production of CSF is primarily carried out by specialized structures called the choroid plexuses, which are located within each ventricle. The continuous circulation and reabsorption of CSF are essential for maintaining proper intracranial pressure and brain function. Disruptions to this system, such as blockages in the flow of CSF, can lead to conditions like hydrocephalus.
