Aivohalvaus, often referred to as a stroke, is a medical emergency that occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Brain cells begin to die within minutes.

There are two main types of strokes. An ischemic stroke, the most common type, happens when a blood vessel supplying the brain is blocked, usually by a blood clot. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, causing bleeding into the surrounding brain tissue. A less common type, a transient ischemic attack (TIA), is often called a mini-stroke. It is caused by a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain and its symptoms are similar to a stroke but usually last only a few minutes and do not cause permanent damage.

Symptoms of a stroke can appear suddenly and include sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance or coordination; and sudden severe headache with no known cause. Prompt medical attention is crucial for stroke treatment, as quick intervention can minimize brain damage and improve the chances of recovery. Treatments vary depending on the type of stroke but may include clot-busting medications, surgery, or rehabilitation therapies.
