afzuigkasten

An afzuigkasten is a ventilated cabinet or enclosure designed to capture and remove airborne contaminants generated during work processes. It is used to protect the operator and the surrounding environment from solvents, fumes, dust, aerosols and vapors.

Construction and operation: An afzuigkast usually consists of a metal cabinet with an open front or sash, an integrated fan, and filtration or ducting. There are two main configurations: ducted models that exhaust air to the outside, and recirculating models that filter air and return it to the room. In recirculating units, filters such as activated carbon (for vapors) and HEPA (for particulates) are common. The cabinet creates local capture by the intake at the front and designed face velocity to improve containment.

Types and uses: Common applications include chemical handling, soldering, painting or varnishing, woodworking, and dental or medical settings where aerosol or solvent containment is needed. Choice between ducted and recirculating designs depends on contaminants, building ventilation, noise, and energy considerations.

Safety and maintenance: Proper installation and commissioning are essential, and devices should be operated within manufacturer specifications. Regular maintenance includes filter replacement, fan checks, and ensuring the intake remains unobstructed. Standards and regulations in many regions require compliance with ventilation or fume-control guidelines and periodic safety assessments.
