In Hungary, where the term "adóbehajtás" originated, the tax authority Arany János utcai Adó- és Pénzügyi Ellenőrző Hivatal (AJA-FNEH) has the power to deduct unpaid taxes and fines from the income of individuals and companies. This can include wage withholding, seizing assets, or freezing bank accounts.

Adóbehajtás is often seen as a measure to ensure that tax debtors fulfill their financial obligations and contribute their fair share to the state's budget. Tax authorities claim it helps to maintain a fair tax system and prevent tax evasion and non-compliance.
