Adipogenesis is the biological process by which preadipocytes, undifferentiated mesenchymal stem cells, differentiate into mature adipocytes, the cells responsible for storing fat. This complex process is tightly regulated and involves a cascade of molecular events.

The differentiation process begins with signals that trigger the commitment of stem cells to the adipocyte lineage. These signals often involve the activation of specific transcription factors, such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) and CCAAT/enhancer-binding proteins (C/EBPs). These transcription factors are considered master regulators of adipogenesis.

Once committed, preadipocytes undergo a series of morphological and biochemical changes.
