Adipatos are a class of organic compounds that are esters of adipic acid. Adipic acid itself is a dicarboxylic acid with the chemical formula (CH2)4(COOH)2. When adipic acid reacts with an alcohol, it forms an adipate ester. The general formula for an adipate ester is (CH2)4(COOR)2, where R represents an alkyl or aryl group.

These esters can be synthesized through a Fischer esterification reaction between adipic acid and the corresponding alcohol, typically in the presence of an acid catalyst. The properties of adipate esters vary depending on the nature of the 'R' group. Adipates find widespread use as plasticizers, particularly in polyvinyl chloride (PVC). They are added to polymers to increase their flexibility, workability, and durability. Common examples include dioctyl adipate (DOA) and diisodecyl adipate (DIDA), which are used in applications such as food packaging films, cables, and flooring. Beyond plasticizers, some adipates are employed as lubricants, solvents, and in the production of some cosmetics. Their relatively low toxicity and good performance characteristics contribute to their broad industrial application.
