Adhesjonene refers to the formation of fibrous bands of scar tissue that can develop between tissues and organs within the body. This is a common complication following surgery, inflammation, infection, or trauma. While adhesions can sometimes be asymptomatic, they can also cause significant problems by binding structures that should normally be separate.

The process of adhesion formation involves the body's natural healing response. When tissues are injured, a process of inflammation occurs, followed by the laying down of fibrin. Normally, enzymes in the body break down this fibrin. However, if the fibrin is not adequately broken down, or if there is excessive inflammation, the fibrin can organize into scar tissue, leading to adhesions. These adhesions can range from thin, wispy strands to thick, dense bands.

The symptoms associated with adhesions depend on their location and the structures they affect. Common complications include chronic pain, particularly in the abdomen, and bowel obstruction, where adhesions can kink or block the passage of food and waste through the intestines. Infertility can also be a consequence, especially in women, where adhesions can affect the fallopian tubes or ovaries. Diagnosis often involves medical imaging techniques such as CT scans or ultrasounds, and sometimes exploratory surgery is required. Treatment typically involves surgical intervention to cut or remove the adhesions, a procedure known as adhesiolysis. However, adhesions can reform after surgery, making prevention a key area of research.
