They may originate from experiments, transactions, surveys, or automated monitoring and can be stored, transmitted, and processed by computer systems.

Data can be categorized in several ways. Structured data follows a predefined model or schema, such as databases with rows and columns. Unstructured data lacks a fixed format, including text documents, multimedia files, and social media content. Qualitative data describe attributes or categories, while quantitative data are numerical and amenable to statistical analysis. Metadata provides descriptive information about data, such as its source, time of collection, and quality.

The data lifecycle includes collection, storage, processing, analysis, dissemination, archiving, and eventual deletion. Data quality is a key consideration and involves accuracy, completeness, timeliness, consistency, and relevance. Effective data management covers governance, standards, security, privacy, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations, such as data protection requirements in the European Union. Interoperability and standards enable data to be shared and reused across systems and organizations.

Applications of adatok include informing decisions, supporting scientific research, powering automation and artificial intelligence, and enabling open data initiatives. Challenges include data privacy and security risks, data bias and representativeness, and the need to overcome data silos and ensure ethical use.
