Acné is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. It often appears on the face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders. Acné can manifest as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and even deeper lumps or cysts. These blemishes can cause discomfort and, in some cases, lead to scarring.

The primary factors contributing to acné are excess oil production by the sebaceous glands, clogged pores, bacteria, and inflammation. Hormonal changes, particularly during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, can exacerbate acné. Genetics also plays a role, as a predisposition to developing acné can be inherited. Certain medications, such as corticosteroids or lithium, can also trigger or worsen the condition.

While acné is most prevalent among teenagers, it can affect individuals of all ages. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the acné and may include topical medications like benzoyl peroxide or retinoids, oral antibiotics, or hormonal therapies. Severe cases might require isotretinoin. Maintaining good hygiene, avoiding picking or squeezing blemishes, and using non-comedogenic skincare products can help manage acné. Although acné is generally not a serious health threat, its psychological impact, including reduced self-esteem, can be significant.
