Abrasers are substances or materials used to remove material from a surface through friction, typically in the form of grinding, polishing, or buffing. They are commonly employed in various industries, including manufacturing, construction, and automotive repair, as well as in household and personal care applications. Abrasives work by physically scraping away layers of material, which can include metals, plastics, paints, or even biological tissues in some cases.

The most common abrasive materials include naturally occurring substances like sand, emery (a form of corundum), and garnet, as well as synthetic compounds such as aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, and diamond. These materials vary in hardness and grain size, allowing them to be tailored for specific tasks. For example, finer-grained abrasives are used for polishing, while coarser ones are better suited for heavy-duty grinding.

Abrasers are often applied to surfaces in the form of loose grains, bonded to a backing material such as paper, cloth, or metal (as in sandpaper or grinding wheels), or suspended in a fluid (as in slurry-based polishing compounds). The choice of abrasive depends on the material being worked on, the desired finish, and the efficiency required. In industrial settings, abrasive tools are frequently powered by electric or pneumatic systems to increase their effectiveness.

Beyond industrial use, abrasives are also found in consumer products like scouring pads, toothpaste, and exfoliating scrubs. In these cases, they help clean or smooth surfaces gently, often with much smaller and softer particles to avoid damage. Proper handling and disposal of abrasive materials are important, as some can be hazardous if inhaled or mishandled, particularly in their powdered form. Safety measures, such as wearing protective gear like gloves and masks, are recommended when working with abrasives.
