Zwischenwelle

Zwischenwelle, also known as an intermediate shaft or layshaft, is a component in mechanical systems, particularly in transmissions, that serves to transmit torque between other shafts. It is typically used when a direct connection between two shafts is not feasible or desirable due to spacing, alignment, or gearing requirements. A zwischenwelle does not directly drive an output shaft; instead, it is driven by one shaft and in turn drives another, often with a change in speed or direction.

In automotive transmissions, the zwischenwelle plays a crucial role in selecting different gear ratios. It typically carries a set of gears that mesh with gears on both the input shaft and the output shaft. By engaging different gear combinations on the zwischenwelle, the driver can achieve various speeds and torque outputs.
