Zojila

Zojila Pass, also called Zoji La, is a high mountain pass in the Indian Himalayas, located in the union territory of Ladakh. It forms part of the Srinagar–Leh Highway (National Highway 1D) and connects the Kashmir Valley with Ladakh. The pass sits at an elevation of about 3,528 meters (11,575 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest road passes in the region.

Geography and route: Zojila lies between Sonamarg in the Kashmir Valley and Drass/Kargil in the Ladakh region. The route through Zojila is a critical artery for civilian travel and military logistics, serving as the main overland link to Leh and surrounding areas. The roadway is narrow and steep, and winter snowfall frequently blocks the pass; it is typically opened after snow clearance in late spring or early summer and closed again in late autumn.

Significance: Zojila is regarded as the gateway to Ladakh and has strategic importance because it provides the primary overland link between the Kashmir Valley and high-altitude frontier areas, including Siachen and other forward posts. The pass has long been affected by security considerations and military operations along the Indo-Pakistani frontier.

Infrastructure projects: A major project to construct the Zojila Tunnel aims to provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Leh, reducing dependence on the surface route and shortening travel times. The project is undertaken by the Border Roads Organisation and is intended to improve year-round access to Ladakh.
